Im Eshkachech – If I forget Gush Katif

Neve Dekalim before the destruction of Gush Katif

Today is Rosh Chodesh Av and according to Jewish tradition this is the last stage of mourning before 9th of Av, the day when the 2nd temple was set on fire. But we have more reasons to mourn in Av then the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash. This is the destruction of Gush Katif (Gaza) in 2005. When the State of Israel eliminated Jewish history from parts of the Holy Land without and without any shame. Therefor whenever we say, “If I forget”, Gush Katif and Northern Shomron should be in our minds as much as Jerusalem but according to my opinion even more. Why? Because the destruction and elimination of Gush Katif was done with Jewish hands and not in the hands of any other Nation.

If I forget then it doesn´t exist

If I forget Gush Katif then I have forgotten about the Holy Land and it is not important in my life. When forgotten, then it doesn´t exist. Not only don´t I care about The Land of Israel, but I don´t care about the Jewish people as a whole. This may sound strange, but it is impossible to say that I care about the Land of Israel if I forget Gush Katif and is not mourning this from the deepest of my heart. Just like the Torah is not a Smorgasbord, the same is true with The Holy Land. Either I care about the Whole Land or no part of the Holy Land is important to me. And any part that is destroyed is like cutting of a limb from my body. Jerusalem is the Heart of the National Body, but Gush Katif is no less than a lung or a kidney.

If I forget Jewish History

Jewish History is much more than what is written in the Tanach. Jewish History is written every day. We can´t say that because the destruction of Gush Katif and Northern Shomron isn´t mentioned in any Holy Books therefore we don´t have to care about it. But I disagree very much. Jewish History can´t be forgotten and we always have to remember. If we ignore and study and remember what happens in the Holy Land, then we can also “ignore parts of the Tanach” that are not relevant today. But all agree that we have to study Tanach and remember Jewish history.

If I forget the destruction of Gush Katif

The destruction of Gush Katif wasn´t only the disagreement itself. Suddenly thousands of Jews had nowhere to go no home. They because refuges in their own home. No work, no income and the State of Israel ignored them and treated them without any human dignity. The outcome of this disaster that is much worse than the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash was the destruction of hundreds of families. Huge mental problems, depressions and abuse that we have never seen before because of this disaster. Many of previously happy Jewish couples ended up in divorces that not only broke up couples but demolished Jewish homes and families. This is impossible to restore and heal. And we all know that a Jewish Home is life a miniature Beis HaMikdash with the Holiness within it.

My last words of reflection

The historical disaster of Gush Katif did not only include the destruction and annihilation of Jewish life and its communities. It also destroyed hundreds of families and the Holiness that each and every family have. This Churban we are never allowed to forget, because if I forget Gush Katif I neither care about the Jewish Nation or the Land of Israel. And as I mentioned before “Never Again”

Jews it is time to come home

Memorials to victims outside the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh

How indoctrinated are our brothers in Chutz L´aretz? How many Anti-Semitic occurrences must happen before the Jews in Galut understand that the statement “Jews it is time to come home” is really true? These are not just incidents that are happening, it is from above – from God. this is God´s way to show us, that it is time to come home and leave the Gashmiut of Galut behind.

Gashmiut, especially in the darkness of Galut is Avodah Zarah (Idol Worship) where a person’s status in the Jewish Community and Society mainly depends on their bank account and occupation and not their Torah and Jewish values. The famous author Tzvi Fishman wrote an excellent novel that really pinpoint the problem by the name “On Eagles Wings” that you also can find in his book Days of Mashiach. Here you can read about the stubborn, very rich South African businessman Mervyn Levy who refused to move to Israel before “Almighty Himself, or at least the Mashiach, to bring him to Zion” because this was what his poor and uneducated Rabbis had taught him.

Jews it is time to come home before it is to late

It is not only anti-Semitism that is a sign from God that the statement “Jews it is time to come home” is true. It also includes lack of Jewish education such as lack of Jewish day schools and Yeshivot. We also have to remember that assimilation and intermarriage also are hints from God to the Jewish people that is it time to come home, and to come home is to move to Israel. Not in any way to build are strengthen Jewish communities in Galut. But it is very important for you Jews to come home before it is too late, so you have time to sell your home, company, real estate and more without the worries of having to do fast and bad decisions and deals because time is running out for you. As we all know, God have pity on his Chosen Nation but not on stupidity. Such as believing that staying in Chutz L´aretz is still a solution and we just need some more patience. That everything will be fine again. Anti-Semitism will end, assimilation will disappear, and Internet marriages will not exist any longer.

Time to come home and build the Jewish Future

The Jewish future is in our hands and in the Land of Israel. There are no excuses for not saying “it is time to come home”. The state of Israel may be far from an optimal Jewish State but what can we do about it? The state is inside the biblical borders of Eretz Yisrael and we have a Torah obligation to live here. Thank God, the modern state of Israel has seen many blessings and God do bestow us with his mercy and blessings every day. We are one of the world leading countries and the Jewish economy is blossoming. From the Jewish perspective, no place in the world can you find a better and more fulfilling Jewish life. Everything that we need to be Jewish and stay Jewish is available here and accessible to all of us. We know that our children can chose from a broad range of Jewish Education such as Jewish Day Schools, Yeshivot, Seminars and much more. It is here that the Jewish future is possible, and it is here in the Land of Israel God want us to be. As mentioned before, to live in Chutz L´aretz is a punishment from God and the Gashmiut that destroy your Jewish soul in Galut is Avodah Zarah!

A Good Quality Life in Moshav Maon

For the past 12 years, we have been living in a community settlement named Moshav Maon in Har Hevron. Our community is located in the southern part of the Hevron Hills on the way south to Be´er Sheva. You drive by the Holy city of Hebron/Kiryat Arba and continue driving for another 20 minutes.  The clime where we live is desert clime with cold and windy winters and hot and dry summers. In total, we are about 80 families living here. According to my opinion, this is a very good place to bring up our family and for children, it can´t get better than in Moshav Maon

Life in Moshav Maon

Moshav Maon is one of about 20 communities in Mount Hebron. We are located in the real center of the country. If you fold the map of Israel, we are located in the center. As mentioned above, in total we are about 80 families living here. When we came to Maon, then everyone kept a high religious level and many of the married men did learn in Kollel. Today, the range of religious observance has a broad range, but everyone keeps Shabbos and Kosher. This is not only a problem in Maon but in the whole society. The influences from the outside do penetrate everywhere. But for sure, everyone feels comfortable in the community and no one is looking down on others because of their way of life. This is something unique that you generally don´t find in religious communities.

Community life in Moshav Maon

Maon is not only a place where we live, but this is also so much more. Moshav Maon is a community in many aspects. When we arrived here 12 years ago less than 50 families lived here. The whole settlement was like one big and happy family. We had a lot of great social gatherings together. Including:

  • a huge community BBQ on Israel Independence Day
  • a big BBQ and Bonfire on Lag B´Omer
  • well as plenty of other happenings.

And the most important thing, you never felt alone. You always know that whatever you needed it as just one or two phone calls away. Even today, with 80 families, Moshav Maon is still a very strong community. It is hard to compare 50 to 80 families, but the feeling of belonging to a community is still here. You always know that if you need something, you are still only a phone call or two away. And people really care about each other and make sure that no one is left out. So, if you want to belong to a unique and strong community Maon is a place that I really recommend for you to check out.

Moshav Maon for children

For children, Maon is a dream place to live for many reasons. Here you will find a lot of activities for all children and ages. We have an excellent Talmud Torah twice a week for each age group from Kindergarten and upwards. Except that, you will also find a lot of children activities such as B´nei Akiva, Oz and every day between Mincha and Ma´ariv in Beit HaKnesset. Every Shabbos morning the children can enjoy a nice children service as well. The children can also walk around freely in the settlement without any worrying. At the playground, you will always see a lot of children playing around both on weekdays as well as during Shabbos and Holidays and no need for parents or adults to be there with them.

Moshav Maon if you like Torah classes

Moshav Maon is an Israeli community settlement, which means that you will not find any English Torah classes here. But we are living in Israel, so we should learn Hebrew anyway. Every day you can enjoy Torah classes in the community. Most of them by our Rabbi Moshe Cohen. Except for the Rabbi´s classes, we also have an evening Kollel in the community. I am a part of it and currently, we are studying Hilchot Shabbos. You can also find different study groups and if you like to have a chavrusa to learn with, a lot of people would like to pair up with you. You will also find different classes only for women. We also have a Midrasha in Maon for girls after Army/Sherut Leumi. This seminar is headed by our previous community Rabbi, Rav Dani Stiskin. He is actually American, so any questions you have, he can help you out.

If you want to check out Maon

It is very hard to get the true picture of Maon on paper, but most people who come and visit get caught up with the atmosphere here. The place is unique as I have mentioned before. I would really suggest you come and visit and see for yourself. If you like to come for a Shabbos to really feel the atmosphere and meet people, you are more then welcome. You can contact me and I will help you to get in touch with the right people.
